The most recent update on road incidents in Tamil Nadu reveals that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) obtains data on road incidents every year from the Police Departments of States/Union Territories, through its Transport Research Wing (TRW). This data is then released in the Ministry’s yearly publication ‘Road Accidents in India’. It is worth mentioning that although TRW under MoRTH does not specifically record data on road incidents related to electric vehicles, it does present statistics on the overall count of road incidents, fatalities, and injuries classified by the types of vehicles involved for the year 2022.
In 2022, Tamil Nadu stood out with the highest tally of road mishaps, reaching a staggering count of 15,054 incidents within the Pedestrian classification out of the overall 77,004 road accidents. Furthermore, a distressing total of 4,427 individuals met their demise due to road accidents in Tamil Nadu throughout the year 2022. The distribution of road accidents by vehicle category in Tamil Nadu for the year 2022 is delineated as follows: Bicycle – 1,766 incidents, Two-Wheelers – 39,676 incidents, Auto Rickshaw – 1,279 incidents, LMV – 3,963 incidents, Trucks & Lorries – 1,065 incidents, and Buses – 1,188 incidents.
