For Armed Forces Pensioners and Family Pensioners under One Rank One Pension, the Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has authorized a pension modification that will take effect on July 1, 2019. (OROP). The minimum and maximum pensions of retired members of the Defense Forces in 2018 with the same rank and years of service would be averaged out to recalculate the pensions of previous retirees.

The Armed Forces’ family pensions and more than 25.13 million retirees would gain (including around 4.52 lakh new beneficiaries). Pensions for people with higher-than-average incomes will be safeguarded. Older people with disabilities and family pensioners like war widows are also qualified for the payment.

Arrears shall be paid in four semi-annual payments. All family pensioners, including those who receive the Special, Liberalized Family Pension and Gallantry Award recipients, will receive a single lump sum payment.

At a rate of 31% Dearness Relief, the annual cost to implement the modification is around Rs 8,450 crore (DR).
