Assam RTO Code

An RTO is set to become operational in Assam by 2023. The central Motor Vehicles Department, which enforces the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 nationwide and is overseen by the Transport Commissioner, will manage this. About Assam Regional Transport Office

The Transport Department in Assam, India used to fall under the Home Department until the late 1950s. A police officer with the Inspector General rank was in charge. In 1951, the “Transport Department, Govt. of Assam” was created to adapt to the state’s changing needs. A government Secretary initially led the department, but over time, the position evolved to a Commissioner & Secretary and then a Principal Secretary. Presently, the department is headed by the “Commissioner of Transport,” who reports to the Assam government.

The acronym RTO is widely used in Assam to refer to various aspects of driving and licensing within the state. Similar to other Indian states, Assam has a government-run agency called the Regional Transport Office that oversees traffic operations in the region. The RTO’s primary duties entail implementing the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, which involves tasks such as pollution monitoring, tax collection, and ensuring compliance with road transport regulations. Currently, there are 28 RTOs in Assam, each distinguished by codes such as AS28, AS19, and AS27.

The Transport Department of Assam fell under the Home Department’s authority until it was renamed as the “Government of Assam Transport Department” in 1951. In pursuit of achieving safer roads and the promotion of eco-friendly transportation, the Assam RTO focuses on strengthening traffic regulations, promoting road safety, providing aid to accident victims, and handling driver’s licenses and road taxes.

It is illegal to operate a car without a proper license, and driving a Transport Vehicle is only permitted if the driver’s license specifically permits it. In order to begin driving a motor vehicle, an individual in Assam must obtain what is known as a “Learner’s Licence.” This licence is temporary and is valid for a period of six months. It is intended to be used to learn how to drive. To obtain this licence, one must submit an application to the appropriate licencing authority based on their location or business operations. Eligibility for a driving licence in Assam is determined by age. For example, those aged 18 years and older can apply for a Lite Motor Vehicle (LMV) Licence, while those aged 20 years and older can apply for a Transport Vehicle Driving Licence. A Motorcycle Driving Licence that does not exceed 50 CC can be applied for by 16-year-olds. The fees associated with acquiring different types of licences include a fee of Rs 200 for both the Learner’s Licence and Permanent Driving Licence, a fee of Rs 250 for licence renewal, and a fee of Rs 300 for driving licence testing.

The Assam RTO requires a set of documents to be submitted for obtaining an LLR. These documents should be attached to the form mentioned in Schedule I and II. The documents required include a Ration Card, Electoral Roll, a Life Insurance Policy, a Pay Slip issued by any State or Central Govt. body, Age Proof Documents like Birth Certificate, School Certificate or a Certificate authenticated by a registered Medical practitioner not below the rank of a Civil Surgeon, and a Self-sworn affidavit as evidence of address. Applicants can also submit an affidavit verified by an Executive Magistrate, 1st Class Judicial Magistrate or a Notary Public for address validation.

VIP Number Plate Assam Price

A proposal has been put forth by the State Government of Assam to generate extra revenue through the auctioning of VIP and elaborate number plates for vehicles. This policy was made public on December 29th through a gazette notification and has been communicated to all District Transport Officers in the region. As per the proposal, those requiring an extravagant license plate must participate in the auction. The auctioning procedure will be established by the Transport Commissioner. Formerly, specialized plates were only granted after payment of Rs 5,000 during the vehicle registration process, with the approval of the Transport Commissioner.
